Background of Asli Sharqi

Initiator and organizer of Asli Sharqi, Ahlem (Laudie Vrancken), has, together with colleagues, been active for many years in developing oriental dance into a performing artform. Through her extensive experiences with Zaghroeda, Haagse Höpjes, het Koorenhuis, amateur and professional performances in various joint ventures and, particularly, with the ‘Dalla Diva’s, she has established a firm base for the next step: Asli Sharqi.

The goals of Asli Sharqi are to stimulate new developments within oriental dance and to display these developments in a proper manner whereby respect for the tradition of this dance is the underlying principle. It is Ahlem’s fervent wish that, in the coming years, the festival will be a meeting place for lovers of belly dance and, at the same time, the festival will inspire individually and collectively to lift belly dance to a higher level. As well as guests from abroad, there are many fine teachers in Holland who are also excellent sources of information, background and ideas for further development. Art asks for expertise, expressiveness and originality...let us try together to reach this aim.
