Film with introduction and interview by Karin Nieuwkerk

The focus of opening night of the festival is the Dutch premiere of the film "At Night, They Dance," by Canadian filmmakers, Isabelle Lavigne and Stephanie Thibault. This film follows the lives of dancers living in a Cairo that we don’t know about and the film will be introduced by Karin van Nieuwkerk. After the film, a discussion will be held about the influence of the contemporary religious climate on the dance world in the Middle East (in collaboration with the NWO project Islam and Performing arts and led by Karin Nieuwkerk).

Debate "What is needed for oriental dance as a performance art?"

The aim of Asli Sharqi is to develop oriental dance into a stage worthy performing art. Led by Feri de Geus and Noortje Bijvoets Le Grand Cru, both with years of experience in creating performances from non-Western dance cultures, we will talk about the requirements, conditions, dreams and future of the oriental dance from the Dutch perspective. What is needed for the required quality and ultimate recognition of this versatile dancing form? www.legrandcru-dance.nl

Catering

During the festival, oriental drinks and snacks will be available in various locations in the festival building. You can also enjoy a quick bite in the theater neighborhood and there may be a simple oriental meal available in the theater itself at the end of the afternoon (subject to conditions).

Movie

Something else? Go to see the movie The Belly Dancer and The Politician, based on the book of Ehsan Abdel Kodous. A film about power, autorhority, corruption and integrity symbolized by a love affair between a politician and a belly dancer.

Asli Sharqi Party

By popular request is a party in the Ketelhuis (complete with DJ) after the Saturday night show. Let yourself go, get those dance feet on the floor for swinging shimmies, snake arms, smooth, winding camels, hip drops & locks!
